Crowns & Bridges

Crowns are used to strengthen and protect remaining tooth structure, as well as rebuild broken or decayed teeth. When a tooth is fractured, has a large restoration or severely damaged by decay a crown may be recommended. Crowns are also used to improve the cosmetic appearance of the tooth as it covers the entire tooth.

The type of crown used will depend on the tooth involved, they include full porcelain crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns and all metal crowns. The placement of the crown will require at least two appointments. At the initial appointment the tooth will be prepared, impressions taken and a temporary crown fitted. At the subsequent appointment the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is fitted and cemented.

When a tooth is lost the remaining teeth can drift out of position, which can lead to a change in the bite, the loss of bone structure, decay and gum disease. A bridge is an appliance permanently fixed in the mouth to replace missing teeth. It uses remaining teeth to support the new artificial tooth or teeth.

A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth rigidly attached in between. The false teeth are called pontics. The bridge can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials.
